Tint percentage is normally discussed as VLT, or visible light transmission. A 70% VLT film allows more visible light through than 35%; 20% and 5% are progressively darker. The number describes light transmission, not heat-rejection performance.
70% is a very light appearance. It is commonly considered when the goal is performance with minimal visual darkening, subject to the glass, film and applicable law.
50% is a light tint that creates a more noticeable change while preserving substantial visibility. It can be useful for drivers who want a subtle appearance.
35% is a visibly tinted appearance and a common comparison point because current North Dakota state guidance references 35% light transmission for certain windows. The combined glass-and-film result still matters.
20% is dark. It can create significantly more privacy and a stronger visual change, but it is not appropriate for every window or every legal situation.
5% is extremely dark and is often called limo tint. It should not be treated as a universal road-legal choice.
An SUV or truck may already have dark rear privacy glass. Adding film over factory-dark glass creates a different final VLT than applying the same film to clear glass. That is why the Bismarck Tint simulator asks for the factory-glass baseline before previewing film shades.
Do not choose a shade solely because you want better heat control. Film construction matters. Ceramic film can deliver stronger solar performance without requiring the darkest appearance.
Straight answers for Bismarck-area customers comparing window film, coverage, performance and installation.
It refers to visible light transmission. A nominal 35% film is designed around allowing roughly 35% of visible light through the film, while the final glass-plus-film result can differ.
Yes. Lower VLT numbers transmit less visible light, so 20% appears darker than 35%.
5% is an extremely dark common automotive shade, but darkness alone does not determine legality or performance.
Yes. Existing glass tint changes the combined VLT and appearance when film is added.
Not necessarily. Film technology and construction matter, which is why ceramic performance should be compared separately from shade.
